That blog entry about military versus civvie employees is one of the most patronising articles I have read for some time and for the most part, utter b******. I have met as many work shy coasters in the military as I have in the outside world.
I don’t want to fall out or have an argument but simplistic articles like that are very divisive.
I joined up at 21 after several years of tough, dead end jobs. The first thing i thought when I came to the end of my 22 a few months ago was…..bugger….back to working for a living.
Show me a civilian company that would allow a third of its strength to go on the lash all Wednesday afternoon at a silver lunch in the mess and then turn up for work the next day mid-morning and proceed to drink tea and sit on their backsides for the rest of the day. Not forgetting the mid-day stack on Friday of course.
Come on, we bust a gut on ops and coast at our permanent units. No denial…
Hi Pete, Thanks for the reply. We are trying to highlight the strong work ethics and discipline of Service Personnel. On detachment , you guys/girls are on call 24/7, of course you are rewarded when you are back in the UK when work is more relaxed, with afternoons off, and long lie-ins after the night before!
A really insightful piece, and I think it applies to civilians too – especially those who think work is a place to go an socialise rather than do anything! Also I think those of use who are older understand better the idea of actually working when you’re at work, even if you don’t get paid for it.
